Scrubtops by Jo started as a hobby and love of sewing.
This is the story of how it came to be.
Meet Jo
Jo has been a nurse for over 25 years.
In that time she’s worked as a surgical nurse and then an immunization nurse.
Jo was originally provided a uniform allowance as part of her salary. This enabled her to buy her scrubs from her employer that was emblazoned with their logo.
The employer removed the allowance and expected staff to still buy the uniform with their logo.
As an act of defiance Jo decided to get out her sewing machine and make her first scrubtop. She didn’t want to pay part of her salary for the privilege of advertising her employer at the time. She also wanted her scrubtops to show some of her own personality.
Jo has been making her own scrubtops ever since. This was some 10 years ago.
Over the years, friends and colleagues admired, praised and requested Jo make them scrubtops as well.
As word of mouth has spread, Jo has made more and more scrubtops for people.
Around 18 months ago, Jo decided to start an Instagram and Facebook page to showcase the scrubs she makes. This has lead to more people discovering her scrubtops.
Her unique and colourful scrubtops can be found in both hospitals and vet clinics around the country now.
Jo also holds stalls at hospitals from time to time where staff can view and try on the scrubtops.
This website has been created to help automate the process. People can now see the various scrubtops Jo has available or the material to make them whenever they like.
It’s still her passion and hobby. She is still a full time nurse. She makes all the scrubtops after-hours as a way to unwind and reset.
She also has made items like Bowl Huggers, Glasses Cases and keyrings.
In the last year, Jo wanted a new challenge. She decided to start making bags.
She’s since gone on to make and launch her label Swagga by Jo.
Jo loves to re-purpose, and you’ll find her bags often reuse denim from old jeans. The denim provides strength to the bags and a unique style.
Each bag she creates is a unique, one-of-a-kind bag.
As a result there is a limited availability and any bag you see listed won’t return once sold.
Jo still loves making scrubtops and is most happiest behind her sewing machine.
So that’s it.
ScrubTops by Jo really is a woman called Jo that makes scrubtops at home. It’s not a big company, just one passionate woman who loves to sew in her spare time.
